Client blog: Behind Closed Doors
This letter comes directly from a Merchants Quay Ireland Jane’s Place client who asked to remain anonymous.
“When I walked through that door, everything changed” – Molly
Dear supporter, dear friend,
Sitting down to write this to you, I can’t help but think of the day I came to Jane’s Place. I was a complete wreck, a shadow of myself.
My confidence had been shattered. My voice had been taken from me. I was so scared, I couldn’t even speak. I certainly wouldn’t have been able to write this to you.
But everything changed when I walked through that door into Jane’s Place. The first person I met here, at the front desk, she made me feel so welcome. I was safe, at last.
Because Jane’s Place is for women only, there was no chance of bumping into my ex. I didn’t have to keep looking over my shoulder. I could relax. I could breathe. I could grow.
My key worker has been absolutely amazing, supporting me in every way you could think of. I’ve found my voice again and done things I never thought I’d be able to do.
Like speaking up in court, against my abuser. That was huge for me. Or having the confidence to pursue a housing claim with the council, so now I have a place of my own.
I’ve got friends here too, a supportive and loving group of women. I know what I’m worth now and my ex will never be able to take that away from me again.
I’ve even started playing music again and singing. It’s a long way from that day when I first came to Jane’s Place, terrified, traumatised, silent.
But every day, there are women arriving like that. I want to do everything I can to help, so I’m writing this letter to you. If you want to help too, you do it by making a donation.
And I know better than anyone, you’ll be giving more than money. You’ll be giving women back everything they’ve lost. So let me say, with all my voice, thank you.
Molly
Thank you for helping more women like Molly open the doors to a new life.
Thanks to your kindness, Jane’s Place – MQI’s women’s only service – is moving to a new building. But it takes more than four walls to help women start their lives over. It also takes the right staff. Before the doors can open, we need your help to fund a nurse and a mental health specialist.
