The Other Ireland: New Photovoice Research Published

A new piece of research, part funded by Merchants Quay Ireland (MQI), was published on behalf of UISCE last week titled ‘The Other Ireland: Visualizing Intersectional Stigma Experiences of People Who Use Drugs Using Photovoice’. The project, led by Dr Nicole Miller from Maynooth University, included client participants from MQI and uses photovoice to share the lived experiences of people who use drugs.

What is Photovoice?

Photovoice (PV) is a creative methodology that integrates the tradition of critical theory, feminism, and documentary photography by engaging with communities to analyse and showcase local knowledge through a participatory research project (Liebenberg, 2022Wang & Burris, 1997).

Key findings of the research

The findings show that people who use drugs face multiple marginalized intersectional identities and social structures that make it difficult for them to find their rightful place in society.
